Turning Ideas into Motion: The Corporate Explainer Playbook

Most organisations have comprehension challenges. They possess ideas worth sharing — strategies, products, processes, values — but struggle to transfer them from the minds of those who understand them to the minds of those who need to. The gap between knowing and communicating is one of the most consequential failures in modern business, and it is almost never solved by producing more text. It is solved by producing better stories, and increasingly, by making those stories move.


The corporate explainer video has emerged as one of the most reliable tools for closing this gap. It is not a trend. It is a response to something fundamental about how human beings process information — and organisations that understand this are gaining a measurable edge over those that do not.


The Cognitive Case for Visual Explanation


Before considering strategy, it is worth understanding why explainer videos work at the level of cognition. The answer lies in what researchers call dual coding theory, first proposed by Allan Paivio in 1971. Paivio's central argument was that the human mind processes verbal and visual information through two separate but interconnected systems, and that when both systems are activated simultaneously, learning and retention are significantly enhanced (Paivio, 1991).


This is not simply a matter of preference or learning style. It reflects the architecture of the brain itself. Visual information is processed by the brain approximately 60,000 times faster than text, and a significant proportion of the cortex is devoted to visual processing (Medina, 2008). When an organisation communicates through text alone, it activates only one cognitive channel. When it communicates through a well-constructed explainer video — combining narration, imagery, motion, and structure — it activates both. The result is deeper encoding, faster comprehension, and more durable retention.


Richard Mayer, whose multimedia learning theory builds on and extends Paivio's work, conducted over two decades of experimental research demonstrating that people learn more effectively from words and pictures together than from words alone (Mayer, 2009). His principles — coherence, signalling, redundancy, spatial contiguity, temporal contiguity — read almost like a production brief for a well-made explainer video: keep it focused, highlight what matters, align audio and visuals, avoid clutter.


Complexity Is Not the Enemy of Clarity


There is a persistent assumption in corporate communication that complexity and clarity are in tension — that the more sophisticated the idea, the harder it is to communicate well. This assumption is almost always wrong. Complexity is not the enemy of clarity. Abstraction is.

The challenge for most organisations is not that their ideas are too complex to explain. It is that their ideas exist at a level of abstraction that makes them difficult to visualise, and therefore difficult to internalise. A new enterprise software platform. A revised regulatory framework. A change management programme. A financial instrument. These are not inherently incomprehensible. They become comprehensible the moment they are rendered concrete — the moment an audience can see what the idea does, not merely what it is.

This is the core function of the explainer video: to make the abstract visible. Animation allows communicators to depict processes that have no physical form — data flows, decision trees, system integrations, cultural values — by giving them shape, sequence, and motion. Live action grounds concepts in recognisable human experience. Motion graphics make relationships between ideas spatially explicit. Each format does something that language alone cannot: it lets the audience see the idea working.


Jerome Bruner, the cognitive psychologist whose work on narrative and learning shaped decades of educational theory, argued that human beings have two fundamental modes of thought: the logico-scientific, which seeks formal argument and evidence, and the narrative, which seeks story and meaning (Bruner, 1986). Corporate communication overwhelmingly defaults to the first mode. Explainer videos, at their best, engage the second — and in doing so, they reach audiences that formal documentation never could.


The Structure of an Effective Explainer


Understanding why explainer videos work is one thing. Knowing how to build one that actually works is another. The most effective corporate explainers share a recognisable architecture — one that maps closely onto what narrative theorists call the problem–solution–transformation arc.


The video begins by establishing the problem — not the organisation's problem, but the audience's problem. This is a crucial distinction. Audiences do not care about a company's need to communicate; they care about their own confusion, frustration, or unmet need. An explainer that opens by naming this experience earns immediate attention, because it signals that what follows is relevant.


The middle section introduces the mechanism: here is how this works, here is what changes, here is the process, the product, the decision, the idea. This is where visual explanation does its most important work. The narration carries the logic; the animation or imagery carries the understanding. Together they move the audience from confusion to comprehension.


The final section completes the transformation by showing what is now possible — what the audience can do, decide, or feel differently about. The best explainers do not end with a call to action in the conventional marketing sense. They end with a sense of arrival: the audience now understands something they did not before, and that understanding is itself motivating.

Research into persuasive communication consistently supports this structure. Petty and Cacioppo's elaboration likelihood model (1986) identifies two routes to attitude change: the central route, which depends on careful consideration of arguments, and the peripheral route, which depends on emotional cues and associations. An explainer video that combines clear logic with compelling visuals and an emotionally resonant narrative activates both routes simultaneously, maximising persuasive impact across different audience types.


The Strategic Case


There is a longer argument to be made about why the explainer video is not merely a communication tool but a strategic asset. In an environment where talent acquisition, customer trust, investor confidence, and regulatory compliance all depend on the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and credibly, the organisation that communicates well has a structural advantage over the one that does not.


Covello and Allen's (1988) foundational work on risk communication established that clarity, consistency, and credibility are the three pillars of effective institutional communication under conditions of uncertainty. Each of these pillars is strengthened by a well-constructed explainer video: clarity through visual simplification, consistency through a repeatable format that can be deployed across audiences and contexts, credibility through the implicit signal that an organisation has invested in being understood.


The organisations that have most effectively adopted explainer video as a strategic communication tool — from technology companies explaining product architecture to healthcare providers simplifying clinical pathways to financial institutions demystifying investment products — share a common insight: the goal is not to impress the audience with the sophistication of the idea. The goal is to transfer the idea from one mind to another, intact and actionable.


That transfer is the whole game. And motion, it turns out, is one of the most powerful vehicles we have for achieving it.
